Liv in Fashion | Over the knee boots and bomber jacket
Well, if we're talking 'last minute throw-together and hope for the best', this might be the epitome. Though, whilst I say 'hope for the best', I guess I'd probably just call it safe, so perhaps there isn't a need to...because that's the thing about staples, you just know you can throw them all together and always create something presentable.

Basics + staples is essentially what I live by; my ultimate equation for effortless dressing. I'll generally add in a statement accessory, like these less-than-subtle mirrored sunglasses, to tie it all together or add a little more interest, though some days, it really is as simple as you envision.

There's often a confusion over the difference between the two and perhaps this is just due to contrasting opinions, but I'll throw in my two cents on why I think there's a distinction.

To me, a staple is an item in your wardrobe that's a keeper; those pieces that can complete or become the foundation to any outfit and should remain in your wardrobe forever. I say this theoretically, as they can of course be replaced if they're ripping at the seams and you're left with more hole than actual garment but you get the gist. A few of my staples include: a leather jacket, a bomber, an LBD, a white shirt, black ankle boots, cross-body bag and over-the-knee boots, which you'll probably notice all make regular appearances in my outfits. A basic falls more into the realm of 'everything in-between' (ie. the non-focal point of an outfit that's pretty much just there to cover up your nakedness). I think the line blurs when a basic can also become a staple. I'm talking the model's best friend - a white tee and well-fitting pair of jeans. Let's face it, man or woman, there's not a person I know that doesn't own these two in some shape or form!

I have a rail in my room where I tend to hang a lot of my staples, alongside any new arrivals that may come along so, as you can imagine, those pieces get updated pretty often. I wrote a post at the beginning of the year detailing more about what made the cut but perhaps it's time to do an updated version. It'll be interesting to see what's really stuck around...

Let me know if your staples are any similar to mine and if not, tell me what I'm missing!
